10.  Tashkent to Tehran (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran ) - EPW- 17 days
Price: $3,720
Departs: March 27, 2010*

Highlights:
Silk Road treasures of Uzbekistan, discover the ancient sites & unique culture of little-visited Turkmenistan, spend time in holy Mashhad and splendid Isfahan.

Samarkand & Bokhara
Our journey begins in the vibrant Uzbek capital Tashkent; one of the most important caravan stops on the Eurasian trade routes. Exquisite Samarkand is a treasure trove of ancient buildings including the huge blue-tiled madrassahs of the city's jewel, Registan Square. Bokhara also boasts its fair share of historic monuments and an interesting old quarter of alleyways and courtyards - the ideal place to sit back and enjoy sipping a fragrant “kokchai”(green tea).

Land of the Turkmen
Passing into Turkmenistan, we travel across the Karakum Desert to Mary, gateway to ancient Merv. Once one of the greatest cities in the whole of Central Asia, its ruins lie scattered across 100 sq kilometres. We explore the capital Ashgabat, with its many monuments in homage to the late and somewhat controversial President Niayzov, as well as more ancient sites such as the Pathian fortress of Nissa. Venturing out of the city, we visit a stud farm where the world renowned Akhalteke horses are raised.

To Tehran
Crossing into Iran, we find ourselves in the holy Shia city of Mashhad, home to the sacred shrine of Emam Reza, a direct descendent of the prophet Mohammed. In the company of our guide, we join the throng of pilgrims and explore the shrine's sacred precincts. A flight takes us across the deserts of eastern Iran to our journeys end in Tehran where we visit some of the museums and have a chance for some last minute shopping in the thriving bazaars.
