Duration: 2008 Sold Out-Book now for 2009!

Monarch butterflies have one of the world's most fascinating migration paths. Don't miss this rare opportunity to observe it for yourself! From the bustling capital of Morelia to time-forgotten Angahuan, from the fury of Paricutín Volcano to the tranquility of the butterfly sanctuaries-follow the monarch migration trail through the remote areas of Mexico.

Itinerary:

Day: Description:
1 Arrive Mexico City:
2 Uruapan:
Stroll through Parque National Eduardo Ruiz waterfall park and enjoy the tropical setting and crystal clear waters.
3 Angahuan/Uruapan:
Learn about rural ways of life in Angahuan, a Purepechan community. Explore by horseback, hike around Paricutin Volcano or walk across the lava fields. Alternatively, visit the Waterfalls of Tzararacua, or maybe the ruins of Tingambato.
4-5 Pátzcuaro:
Spend the afternoon marvelling at the beautiful plazas and colonial buildings in this magical city. From woodcarvings to pottery, the towns around Pátzcuaro are known for creating exceptional handcrafted products. We take a boat ride out to the famous island of Janitzio and also visit Tzintzuntzan, the capital of the ancient Tarascan kingdom.
6-7 Morelia:
Take some time to explore one of the first Spanish cities in Nueva España. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy the atmosphere with a coffee in one of the many cafés round the Zócalo.
8 El Rosario / Angangueo:
Pass by scenic countryside on the way to El Rosario, a magnificent monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Complete with visitor center, walkways and forested trails, millions of butterflies congregate at this sanctuary every year.
