From Krakow we drive straight to our hotel in the delightful spa town of Szczawnica, nestling in the picturesque Pieniny Mountains. We've two full days to enjoy the crisp fresh air here, taking a scenic drive over the border to the Slovakian village of Cerveny Klastor and the start of our walk along the "Pieniny Way", which weaves alongside the river in the stunning Dunajec Gorge. The craggy and forested limestone cliffs are a haven for many species of birds. Conditions allowing, we don snow-shoes for the more remote trails, an easily mastered way to make light work in the thicker snows. For those who wish, there are some popular (and very good value) ski slopes to the south of the town, or the chance to try snowmobiling from nearby Jaworky. An evening sleigh ride provides the perfect ending to an active day. From Marrakech, we drive high into the Atlas mountain range. Running east to west for some fifteen hundred miles and falling abruptly away to the Sahara desert in the south, the Atlas reaches a spectacular 4165m at the summit of Jebel Toubkal. From the village of Imlil, our mule-supported trek takes us first to the typical Berber village of Aremd (1950m). Admiring the dramatic views to the surrounding snow-capped peaks, we continue to our refuge (3207m). From here we make day treks out to nearby peaks as conditions allow, including Ouanoukrim (4086m), Tizi Ouanoums (3650m) and Jebel Toubkal (4165m), approached by the south col.

Based in the snowy northern outpost of Kiruna, the fun starts with a dog sled safari. With our professional guide, team of 12 huskies and 3-4 people per sled, we mush off into the wilderness. We shall take our lunch in a Sami tent in a beautiful nature reserve and can round the day off with a steaming sauna. Next, switching our transport to snowmobiles (optional), we can race across the snowfields towards Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak, stopping en route to try a spot of ice fishing.
