Country Focus: Nepal
Nepal
Sandwiched between the enormous land masses of Tibet and India, Nepal is a relatively small country, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in dramatic scenery and the vast range of experiences on offer. Nepal contains a huge stretch of the Himalayas so its unsurprising that trekking is the main draw. Other attractions include Kathmandu; the wildlife reserves of the lowland jungles in the south; Buddhist and Hindhu temples and festivals; white-water rafting and mountain-biking.
Many visitors also come in pursuit of bodily calm and spiritual truth, and Nepal has plenty of practitioners of massage, Ayurvedic and Tibet medicine and astrology, plus courses in meditation and yoga.
Himalayas
The north of the country is occupied by the highest mountain range in the world with scores of dramatic peaks. Whether it is from near or gar, during a hard trek or from the comfort of an airplane seat, the aim of every visitor to the country is to catch sight of these amazing mountains.
Kathmandu
Nepal's sprawling capital city is noisy and traffic-clogged, but also vibrant, excellent for shopping, eating and arranging trips out into the wilderness. Durbar Square, in the heart of the city, is the location of innumerable temples and ancient monuments, most notably the Hanuman Dhoka (Old Royal Palace) and the Kumari Chowk; the latter is home to Nepal's preeminent living goddess, the Kumari, the living incarnation of the Hindu goddess Durga.
Kathmandu Valley
Some of the best preserved historic buildings and temples in the area are found in the ancient city of Bhaktapur, which has its own Durbar Square, featuring the five-storey Nyatapola pagoda. Patan, just south of Kathmandu, is the valley's most Buddhist city, with a calmer, less frantic feel than elsewhere; there is yet another Durbar Square here, with a fine Royal Palace dating from the seventeenth century and a number of temples.
Pokhara
One of the most popular destinations in Nepal, Pokhara is excellent for simply relaxing amid great scenery and in plenty of comfort; the views of the unforgettable Machhapuchre and the Annapurna and Manaslu mountain ranges are stunning.
