Destination of the Month
Turkey
Turkey has an array of attractions for visitors from adventurers to
gastronomes to history buffs and cultural travelers.
For the adventurer, head east to Nemrut Daği National Park – the star
attraction of the region. See the spell-binding peaks of Nemrut Daği and be
astounded by the 10-foot colossal stone head statues covering this remote
mountaintop at 2150m. The stunning scenery and historical sights make a
visit here essential.
For the gastronome, look no farther than Istanbul for a “meyhane” to enjoy
some mezes (small plates of starters), kebabs and
Turkish beer or raki.
Thirsty Turks enjoy 60 million litres of raki each year with their meals.
Just keep in mind it’s quite potent at 80-100 proof!
For the history buff, immerse yourself in marvels and mementos from the dawn
of civilization. The Mediterranean landscape is dotted with battlegrounds,
ruined castles and palaces of great empires including Topkapi Palace, Anatolian
plateau, Pergamum and Ephesus.
For the cultural traveler, spend an afternoon pampering yourself in true
Turkish fashion at a Turkish Bath, or “hamam.” An important part of Turkish
life since Medieval times has been placed upon this cleansing ritual.
Another part of the Turkish culture are coffee-houses, or “kahve”. In old
times, men used to smoke hubble-bubble pipes, “nargile” while enjoying each
other’s company. Look for a coffee-house in Istanbul and enjoy this
authentic Turkish past time.
Enjoy all that Turkey has to offer – from hiking to eating to seeing
historical sites and enjoying local traditions. There is a slice of Turkey
for everyone!
