"Australia has become the international destination most Americans say they would like to visit. This welcoming country has a population of 21 million, but a huge majority live in the coastal towns and cities. Sydney has probably the greatest skyline in the world, boasting the magnificent Opera House and Harbour Bridge, but the Gold Coast and Great Barrier Reef are also both spectacular. To really get a grasp of the country, however, you need to take a safari into the Red Centre. Near the end of a six-month stay in the northern Queensland town of Cairns, I decided to experience the Outback for myself and joined a small group of travelers on a safari from Cairns to Alice Springs.
Driving out of Cairns into the Atherton Tablelands, I could better comprehend the vast open spaces this country is known for. You would literally drive an entire day and meet possibly three other vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Occasionally you might see wild kangaroos leaping alongside the road. One night we slept outside on a large tarpaulin under huge eucalyptus trees, and woke to a beautiful chorus of birdsong around us. After several days of driving, the landscape turned progressively redder and the temperatures soared. We reached Alice Springs in the heart of the Northern Territory, then drove on to Ayers Rock to watch the sunset colors change from the desert floor. After a cold night spent out in the open huddled in sleeping bags, we began an early morning ascent of the Rock in complete darkness for the experience of watching the sunrise over the desert. Just as impressive was a walk through the Olgas, a unique rock formation of many large domes that is also sacred to the local Aboriginal people. Time did not allow me the pleasure of visiting Kakadu National Park, but one day I hope to experience that too!"
